I recently got an Apple TV 2G and I realized how difficult it was finding some info.
So here are a few Q.n.A from my own research/experience.
(Note these Q.n.A only apply to the Apple TV 2G, while some may work for the Apple TV 1G, I can not vouch for there validity)
Q. How many modes does the Apple TV 2G have?
A. The Apple TV has 3 modes
- Normal Mode – This is the normal Apple TV Mode (iTunes does not seem to detect Apple TV in this mode and it requires both the USB cable and the Power cable to be attached)
- Recovery Mode – This is the mode used to “Recover” your Apple TV (Achieved by connecting the USB Cable only)
- DFU Mode – This mode is used when you have some major issues with your Apple TV, or if your planning to jailbreak it (Achieved by pressing Menu + Down for 6 seconds, then Menu + Play immediately after for 6 seconds)
Q. How do I jailbreak Apple TV 2G with firmware 4.2.X or higher?
A. There is currently a teatherd jailbreak for Apple TV 2G, however I have yet to be successful in performing this Jailbreak.
Q. How do I get the Apple TV into DFU Mode?
A. Follow these steps
Step 1: Plug the Apple TV into your computer using a Micro USB Cable, ***MAKE SURE THE POWER CABLE AND HDMI CABLE ARE NOT CONNECTED
Step 2: Once iTunes detects it, Press and hold the Menu + Down button on the Apple Remote for approx 6 Seconds.
Step 3: Immediately after, press and hold the Menu + Play button for 6 Seconds again.
You can verify the Apple TV is in DFU mode by checking the System Profiler on Mac OSX
